We have taken all of our favourite ingredients from ranch dressing and paired them up with blue cheese for the ultimate dip!
If you’re after a family-friendly dip recipe that’s creamy and full of character, this blue cheese ranch dip is one to try. It comes together in minutes with sour cream, mayo, and crumbly blue cheese, balanced with a touch of vinegar, herbs, and a pinch of sugar to round things out. It’s smooth and creamy—ideal for dunking chips, chicken dippers, or crunchy veggies. I particularly like it with Chicken wings or dunking pizza crusts. And, when you serve it up alongside a bowl of hot sauce, you have a winning dip combo!
Blue cheese dip is a brilliant one to make ahead too. A short rest in the fridge gives the flavours time to settle in, making it even better a little later on. We often pair it with Marmite Chicken Dippers for dipping, or spread it inside sandwiches like this Chicken Club Sandwich for something a bit different. If you’re a fan of creamy dips, it’s right at home with the Spinach and Parmesan Dip or Roasted Garlic Dip too.
It keeps well in the fridge for a few days, so you can make it ahead and serve your chilled for parties, BBQs, or just to have on hand for snacking.
Equipment Needed:
- Blender or Food Processor: To blend the everything together into a smooth and creamy dip.
- Small Mixing Bowl and Stirring Spoon: For stirring in the herbs and sugar after blending.
- Airtight Container or Jar: If making ahead—store in the fridge and give it a stir before serving.
Ingredients:

- Sour Cream: Forms the base of our creamy herb dip along with the mayo. Ideally, use a full fat version.
- Mayonnaise: Balances the sour cream and makes the dip extra smooth and rich. Use Full fat for the best flavour.
- Creamy Blue Cheese: Choose a milder, creamy blue cheese so it blends easily and doesn’t overpower the dip. Have a little more to hand and garnish the ranch dip with extra blue cheese before serving.
- White Wine Vinegar: Adds a subtle sharpness to cut through the richness.
- Fresh Dill and Flat-Leafed Parsley: Finely chopped—it gives a herby, ranch-style flavour.
- Granulated Sugar: Just a little to balance the vinegar and enhance the creamy base.
- Sea Salt and Freshly Ground Black Pepper: To season the dip and bring all the flavours together.
Substitutions and Additions:
Wondering if you can substitute or add an ingredient? Here, I will tell you if that’s possible.
Substitutions
- White Wine Vinegar: Apple cider vinegar or lemon juice both work as alternatives—adjust to taste.
- Fresh Dill and Parsley: Dried herbs can be used if that’s what you have—use about a third of the amount as dried herbs are more concentrated.
- Sour Cream: Greek yoghurt is a good substitute if you want a slightly tangier, lighter dip.
- Parsley: Chives or spring onion can be swapped in for a different herb taste.
Additions
- Crushed Garlic or Garlic Powder: Add a small amount if you want to deepen the flavour.
- Finely Chopped Chives: Stir through for a mild oniony bite that compliments the blue cheese. You can also add a pinch of onion powder too.
- Crispy Bacon Crumbles: Stir through just before serving for a smoky, salty crunch. I don’t recommend storing the dip with bacon added however, as the bacon will go soft.

Step-By-Step Guide – How To Make Blue Cheese Ranch Dip

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes—just mash the blue cheese with a fork and whisk everything together in a bowl. It won’t be as smooth, but it still works.
It depends on the cheese you use. A creamier blue like Gorgonzola is milder, while Stilton will give it more of a punch.
You can—just thin it out with a splash of buttermilk or milk until you get the consistency you like.
Mastering This Recipe – Expert Tips
- Use Creamy Blue Cheese: Softer, milder cheeses like Danish Blue or Gorgonzola blend more easily and create a smoother dip.
- Let It Chill: If you’ve got time, chill the dip for at least 30 minutes before serving—it helps the flavours come together.
- Adjust the Texture: For a thicker dip, use more mayo or less vinegar. For a thinner sauce, add a splash of buttermilk or milk.
- Taste Before Serving: The strength of blue cheese can vary—taste and adjust the seasoning to suit your preference.
Storage
- Fridge: Store the blue cheese dip in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Give it a stir before serving, as it may thicken slightly or separate a little as it sits.
- Freezing: Not suitable for freezing. The dairy ingredients can separate and affect the texture once defrosted.
