If you prefer, you can also bake your bagel crisps in an air fryer. You simply need to follow all of the same instruction in this recipe, but instead of baking in the oven, place them into your air fryer basket 180°C for about 4-5 minutes.

Just be careful not to overcrowd the cooking basket, cook the bagel chips in batches if necessary and place them on a cooling rack while you bake the next batch.

FAQ

Do I need a special tool to slice the bagels thinly?

No special tool is required; a sharp knife with serrated edges works best.

How do I prevent the bagel crisps from sticking to the tray?

Use parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to line the tray and prevent sticking.

Should I use fresh bagels or stale bagels?

Either will be fine. However, you may find stale bagels are easier to work with. Fresh bagels are more difficult to slice and may require slightly longer in the oven to bake.

Pro Tips and Guidance

  • Even Slicing: Ensure uniform thickness while slicing bagels to achieve consistent crispiness across all pieces.
  • Proper Coating: Thoroughly coat bagel slices with the seasoned oil mixture, ensuring each piece absorbs the flavours.
  • Lining the Tray: Use parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent the bagel crisps from sticking to the baking tray.
  • Golden-Brown Indicator: Watch for a golden-brown colour during baking; this signals that the crisps are perfectly toasted.
  • Flip for Evenness: Flip the bagel crisps halfway through baking to ensure even crispiness on both sides.
  • Salt After Baking: Sprinkle sea salt after baking to retain crisp texture; salting before may draw out moisture.

Storage

  • Storage: Store bagel crisps in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. Ensure that they are fully cooled and not too oily before you store them.
  • Freezing: Bagel crisps are best enjoyed fresh and I don’t recommend them for freezing. Freezing may alter their texture, making them less appealing.
